CarbonCure Technologies Statement on U.S. Buy Clean Task Force & Other Federal Actions
February 15, 2022, Halifax, NS — CarbonCure Technologies Senior Director of Government Affairs Eric Dunford issued the following statement about the new U.S. Buy Clean Task Force & Other Federal Actions:
“CarbonCure Technologies applauds the White House for establishing a multi-agency Buy Clean Task Force to promote the use of construction materials with lower lifecycle emissions. With the massive purchasing power of federal agencies - including the Department of Defense - the U.S. federal government will make sustainable building materials, including low carbon concrete, the new industry standard.
After years of rumbling about a future transition to sustainability in manufacturing, this commitment marks the start of a seismic shift in the evolution of greener building materials. In the near term, any supplier or builder of federal projects will need to measure the emissions impact of their manufacturing and will be incentivized to lower their process emissions.
Also announced today, CarbonCure welcomes the expansion of the First Movers Coalition to cover four additional sectors: aluminum, cement, chemicals and carbon removal. Led by the State Department through the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and the World Economic Forum, the coalition aligns public and private sector decarbonization efforts and aims to secure corporate purchasing commitments for low carbon concrete and other materials.
In addition, CarbonCure is pleased to see the White House announce new federal guidance for carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects that will provide greater accuracy and understanding of the life-cycle benefits of recycling captured carbon dioxide in products like concrete. We support the federal government’s plans to engage frontline communities and create new financing and investment opportunities to catalyze CCU and CDR innovation.
Paired with the recent Executive Order on Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability and the accompanying Federal Sustainability Plan, the U.S. government is taking important steps to catalyze innovation and reduce embodied carbon emissions. Far beyond the footprint of the federal government, these actions will spur industry-wide demand for low carbon building materials - such as carbon mineralized concrete - and accelerate the manufacturing sector’s green transition.”
This government-wide initiative comes as construction projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law break ground. We are proud to already be working with innovative concrete producer partners across the U.S. who are well-positioned to meet the federal government’s call for lower carbon concrete. These concrete producers have already embraced smart solutions to reduce their emissions and they’re ready to get the job done.”
