The Impact of Federal Buy Clean Requirements on the Concrete Industry
Most concrete producers find the task of creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to be confusing, costly, and time-consuming. But with the new federal procurement requirements in the United States prioritizing the purchase of low carbon construction materials, EPDs are quickly becoming a must-have for all concrete mixes.
From January 1, 2023, the United States federal purchasing agencies are required to obtain EPDs for concrete building materials used on federal projects. Combined with the growing demand from the AEC community for ways to measure embodied carbon, the use of ‘Buy Clean’ procurement principles by federal agencies will likely create pressure on states and the private sector to follow suit with similar EPD requirements.
