CarbonCure Signs The Climate Pledge, Joining 200+ Total Signatories

Carbon XPRIZE-winning climate tech company becomes a signatory of The Climate Pledge one year after its announcement as a Pledge Fund portfolio company

HALIFAX, NS, September 20, 2021 — CarbonCure Technologies, a carbon utilization company that provides a suite of carbon dioxide removal technologies to the concrete industry, has signed The Climate Pledge, alongside a cohort of 86 new signatories and among a total of more than 200 companies to date.

Co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, The Climate Pledge is a commitment by companies to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Accord’s goal of net zero by 2050.

CarbonCure Technologies—a grand-prize winner of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE—is a carbon utilization company on a mission to annually reduce and remove 500 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the concrete industry by 2030. The company’s goals closely align with those of its fellow Pledge signatories.

“We are honored to stand with Amazon, Global Optimism and every signatory of The Climate Pledge. At CarbonCure, we are not only committed to helping the concrete industry decarbonize but also to reducing our own operational impact. In 2020, we offset our own emissions and reinvested back into the carbon removal (CDR) ecosystem by purchasing CDR credits,” said CarbonCure Chair and CEO Rob Niven. “CarbonCure hopes to inspire other Pledge signatories to make similar commitments, as we collectively catalyze and scale up a diverse portfolio of carbon removal solutions critical to the world’s ability to meet global climate goals.”

CarbonCure is the first carbon removal company to join The Climate Pledge and is among the five inaugural portfolio companies of Amazon’s $2B Climate Pledge Fund. In addition, CarbonCure concrete is a key element of Amazon’s strategy to slash embodied carbon emissions at its new Arlington headquarters as well as Amazon job sites across North America, including offices, fulfilment centers and data centers. CarbonCure also collaborated with Amazon Web Services to develop new digital analytics and trading solutions for its carbon removal credit program.

“CarbonCure is a true success story of The Climate Pledge Fund. The company’s phenomenal innovation and rapid growth demonstrate the power of the Fund to make real progress in the fight against climate change. CarbonCure is demonstrating how successful portfolio companies can go on to contribute to the ongoing investment and innovation cycle,” said Matt Peterson, Director of the Climate Pledge Fund.

“In order to make a real difference in the fight against climate change, we know we can’t act fast enough if we only act alone. As a Climate Pledge signatory, we’re excited to join other mission-aligned companies to scale our impact faster and collaborate on smart strategies to slash our carbon footprints and create new competitive advantages,” said Niven.

Established in Nova Scotia in 2012, CarbonCure’s long-term vision is to support the complete decarbonization of the concrete manufacturing process through continued innovation and rapid scaling of its suite of carbon mineralization solutions. Today, the company’s carbon removal technologies are installed at more than 400 concrete plants across four continents, used to date in more than 13 million yd3 of concrete. This has resulted in CO2 savings of more than 119,000 tonnes. That’s equivalent to taking nearly 26,000 cars off the road for a year or annual carbon sequestration across roughly 143,000 acres of forest - about the size of Utah's Zion National Park.

CarbonCure launched its carbon removal credit program in 2021, establishing a verified methodology for high-quality credits resulting from its carbon mineralization technologies.

“As both a seller and a buyer of carbon removal credits, we recognize the importance of additionality, traceability and permanence to ensure that carbon removal activities make a real and lasting impact,” Niven said.
