CarbonCure Technologies Statement on Synthesis Report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 20, 2023 — The following is a statement from CarbonCure Technologies Chair and CEO Robert Niven on the latest report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC):

CarbonCure Technologies recognizes the urgency and importance of the findings presented in the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The report provides critical insights on the current state of the planet's climate and the need for immediate action to prevent further damage. It is the most comprehensive analysis of climate change to date, providing a crucial call to action for all sectors to reduce emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

One key takeaway from the report is the urgent need for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies. The report makes it clear that, without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, achieving the Paris Agreement's goals of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels will not be possible. However, even with these reductions, carbon removal technologies will still be necessary to remove excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and achieve net-zero emissions.

The IPCC report authors also highlight the essential need for technologies to manage emissions from difficult-to-decarbonize industrial processes, such as cement manufacturing for concrete construction around the world. “Reaching net zero CO2 or GHG emissions primarily requires deep and rapid reductions in gross emissions of CO2,” the report reads. “However, some hard-to-abate residual GHG emissions (e.g., some emissions from agriculture, aviation, shipping, and industrial processes) remain and would need to be counterbalanced by deployment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods to achieve net zero CO2 or GHG emissions.”

CarbonCure Technologies is proudly developing and globally deploying our suite of technologies that help on both fronts: achieving both emission reductions and removals in an industry with hard to abate emissions.

CarbonCure’s mission is to annually reduce and remove 500 million metric tons of CO2 across the global concrete industry. Thanks to the incredible commitment and support of our field-leading concrete producer partners around the world, we’re marking great progress. And with hundreds of systems operating across more than two dozen countries, transforming concrete plants into a worldwide network of carbon removal factories, we aim to have as much impact as possible, as soon as possible. To date, we have saved 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and we’re just getting started.

For CarbonCure, and everyone pursuing climate solutions, this report is a serious reminder of the imperative nature of our work; it is also a strong motivation as we strive to expand and accelerate our efforts.
