CarbonCure’s Dr. Sean Monkman Receives Prestigious ACI Foundation Innovation Award
The award recognizes CarbonCure’s SVP of Tech Development for his contributions to concrete sustainability and his innovations advancing carbon utilization in the concrete industry
Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 3, 2023 — CarbonCure Technologies, the global leader in carbon removal technologies for the concrete industry, is pleased to announce that Dr. Sean Monkman, Senior Vice President of Technology Development at CarbonCure, has been awarded the prestigious Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award at the ACI Concrete Convention in San Francisco, with formal recognition coming at the convention’s President's Reception.
The Innovation in Concrete Award, established in 2010 in memory of long-time ACI committee member Jean-Claude Roumain, recognizes individuals who have contributed to original developments in concrete production or have used concrete in innovative ways to contribute to a sustainable built environment.
ACI Foundation Executive Director Ann Masek said, “Sean has long demonstrated strong advocacy for sustainability supported by a wealth of his innovative research and patents. We applaud his efforts as the concrete industry moves toward carbon-neutral concrete.”
Dr. Monkman has spent more than 25 years working in concrete materials, including 15 years researching and advancing carbon utilization and mineralization technologies at CarbonCure, developing numerous patents and peer-reviewed articles. Under his leadership, the CarbonCure R&D team enabled the transformation of CarbonCure’s ready mix technology into a commercial product now used in hundreds of concrete plants worldwide to support sustainability and improved profitability through cement reductions. Dr. Monkman was also instrumental to CarbonCure’s grand prize-winning Carbon XPRIZE entry, building a carbon mineralization system for concrete plant reclaimed water that is now being deployed commercially across North America.
"I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive this award and to be recognized alongside such trailblazing individuals who have come before me. This recognition is not just for me, but also for the entire Research team at CarbonCure, whose innovations in carbon utilization and mineralization in concrete over the past decade are nothing short of amazing,” Dr. Monkman said. “Together, we seek to continue enhancing our technologies to benefit our concrete producer partners, increase potential carbon savings and leave a lasting impact on the world.”
In addition to Jean-Claude Roumain, past recipients of the ACI Foundation’s esteemed Innovation in Concrete Award include Karen Scrivener, Larry Sutter, and Kamal Khayat.
CarbonCure Chair and CEO Robert Niven said, "We take immense pride in Sean's remarkable accomplishments within the realms of carbon removal and utilization. His groundbreaking contributions have resonated on a global scale, and their significance will only grow as the industry embraces sustainability and the demand for greener building materials continues to surge.”
Over the past decade, hundreds of field-leading concrete producer partners across more than two dozen countries have used CarbonCure’s technologies to deliver more than four million truckloads of high-quality, lower-carbon concrete for a wide range of applications in thousands of construction projects around the world.
