Cement Industry Veteran Joins CarbonCure Board of Directors

Onne van der Weijde brings three decades of expertise in leading construction materials businesses to profitable growth.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, June 13 — CarbonCure Technologies today announced the appointment of Onne van der Weijde to its Board of Directors. He is a veteran construction materials executive, with 30 years of experience solving complex problems for companies.

Van der Weijde currently serves as senior adviser to the CEO of CRH, one of the largest vertically integrated materials and construction companies in the world. He is also a longtime champion of sustainability. As CEO of Ambuja Cements, one of India’s leading cement companies, part of Holcim Group at the time, Van der Weijde served as Asia business representative on Holcim’s sustainability council. He also oversaw the publication of the industry’s first triple bottom line business assessment, evaluating Ambuja's economic, social and environmental impacts. Featured as a Harvard Business School case study, Holcim would later adopt this “people, planet, profit” approach worldwide.

“I firmly believe that the most sustainable and circular solution for the cement and concrete industry is to ‘put the genie back in the bottle’ or, in other words, put CO2 back into rock—a feat that CarbonCure has successfully mastered with its innovative technologies,” said Van der Weijde. “I am pleased to join the Board and support CarbonCure’s mission to bring this groundbreaking solution to manufacturers worldwide.”

Based in the Netherlands but operating globally, Van der Weijde has led organizations with more than 30,000 employees in diverse markets, including Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa. He has also held non-executive directorships with Schneider Electric India since 2021 and Siam City Cement in Thailand since 2022.

“We are thrilled to welcome Onne to our Board of Directors,” said Rob Niven, CEO and founder of CarbonCure. “Onne’s extensive experience in the global construction materials industry — particularly cement manufacturing — combined with his proven ability to drive growth and operational excellence, will greatly enhance our mission to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that empower concrete producers worldwide."

A category leader in lower carbon concrete and carbon utilization tech, CarbonCure reduces the production cost and carbon footprint of concrete. CarbonCure offers the global concrete industry an integrated and easy-to-adopt decarbonization platform, featuring a suite of CO2 mineralization hardware, software and carbon market services.

“I am delighted to welcome Onne to CarbonCure’s Board. His vast industry knowledge and leadership experience will be tremendous assets to CarbonCure as the team strives to achieve its mission of decarbonizing the concrete industry,” said Lisa Bate, Board Chair at CarbonCure.
